Tenjutsu: Rogue-Jutsu Action Game (by Sébastien Benard, creator of Dead Cells)
Overview
Tenjutsu is a relentless martial-arts roguelike set in Secret Garden City. My goal was to marry traditional Japanese instrumentation with hard-hitting action cinema sound design, delivering brutal combat feedback that stays readable at breakneck speeds.
Key Work
Audio Direction & Combat Feedback: Blended authentic Japanese instruments (taiko, shakuhachi, shamisen) with heavy punch layers and sharp weapon transients. Designed modular impact, parry, and dodge assets shaped to avoid ear fatigue during intense repetition.
Clarity & Gameplay Cues: Carved precise frequency pockets and transients so critical audio tells always cut through chaotic multi-enemy encounters.
Voice Direction: Directed and processed voice assets for the protagonist and rival syndicates, focusing on distinct faction identities and readable combat exertion cues.
Music Mixing & Mastering: Mixed and mastered the soundtrack to hit commercial loudness while locking tightly with the sound effects. Used targeted sidechaining and strict low-end control so the score drives momentum without masking gameplay-critical transients.
